Bleach Pen Shirts

So, I have a bunch of clothes that have bleach on them.   (You should see my bleached out wardrobe… it’s vast!)  And, I found this blog at Show Tell Share and this cool idea to save my clothes.  Yay! I love to save stuff from the brink of the trash can.

I don’t know why I didn’t think of this sooner!  Bleach pen shirts!  It’s brilliant!

Okay here’s what you do:

Get a raggedy old shirt that you are getting ready to toss in the trash, (you can use a new shirt, if you don’t have a raggedy old one, like me) and a bleach pen.  I used the bleach, gel pen, and a 100% cotten t-shirt.

You will want to put something inside the shirt so the bleach does not run through to the other side.  I used a cereal box, folded down.

I drew a design on my shirt with an ink pen.  I was not too worried about it staining, because…umm…

I’m using bleach!

(Yes, I let my kids eat Reeses Puff cereal. I know, I’m a bad mom, but it has whole grains!  It says so right on the box! It’s guaranteed! ;) )

Now take your bleach gel pen and trace over your design.

If you look close, in this picture you will see the bleach had bled past the gel and had already turned the shirt white.  This happened almost as soon as I put the gel on, so I washed it off as soon as I could see white on the whole design. ( I think this happened because of the quality of the shirt was not very good. The other shirts, I did, took longer to bleach.)

After I rinsed off the bleach in warm water, I threw the shirt in the wash.

Here is what it looked like when it came out of the wash…

My daughters shirt took a little longer for the bleach action to work, maybe like 15 minutes or so.  The quality of her shirt was a little better so it took longer. (Yeah, I buy cheap for myself!) I also think it has to do with whether or not the threads are pre-dyed before they are spun into fabric.  Just a thought. ;)

Let me know if you do this and how it turns out.

Hope you have a great week! Happy Monday all!

  1. Very Cool… I wish I had as much time on my hands as you do! LOL just kidding! I might try this…. but the list of things I want to do and try is getting very long!

  2. They turned out great! I love the flower on the blue shirt. Thanks for letting me know you made them. I love seeing what others make from what they see on our blog! Next week I am doing a feature on all the bloggers that made projects from our site. I will be linking your shirts up. Thanks again!
