I’ve been (kinda) on on little kick with making two ingredient recipes… Okay, I’ve made ONE other recipe with two ingredients, you might remember… 2 Ingredient Strawberry Fudge? Yeah, so that’s my little kick, mm-kay?
Anyhoo, I found this pin on Pinterest, for cup-cakes, and I knew I had to try this as cake… (I could not find the site that the pin originally came from.) (Update: a reader emailed me and said she thinks this recipe originally came from Diet Rite Soda, so now I can give someone credit for this marvelous recicpe!!! :D)
Two Ingredient CAKE!!! As seen on My Recipe Magic!!!
But, for-realz, folks, this is quite possibly the easiest cake in the whole wide world. AND… it’s low on calories too. Woo-hoo! How can you not love this cake???
Seriously!?!
How can you get any easier than two (2) ingredients??? (Okay… three ingredients if you count frosting… and, four if you count sprinkles!! :D)
Two Ingredient Strawberry Cake
1 box strawberry cake mix
12 oz. diet 7-up
Combine the cake mix and the 7-up in a bowl and beat with an electric mixer until well blended. Bake as directed on box. (I decreased the temp to 325° and decreased the time by 5 minutes.) Cool and frost with Cool Whip or any frosting of your choice.
To print this recipe (just in case someone has a hard time remembering 2 ingredients… :D) click Two Ingredient Strawberry Cake.
I’m just thinking of all the combinations you could make!! I’ve never tried this, but I’ve been told that for chocolate cake to use diet Coke or Pepsi, or even Dr. Pepper. (Oh… chocolate cake is so on my list to make!!)

Thanks, Ashley! Yes, this cake is very moist! Thanks for the invite and for stopping by!
I made this cake last night except it was the lemon cake mix with the 7 up. Well I did not have 7 up so I used Sprite and the receipe I was looking at called for 20 oz of drink. It was awful, you could not cut it because it was so gummy and gooey. I was thinking well you must have to use 7 up but now I am seeing that 20 oz of liquid is intirely too much. So I will try it one more time, with another maybe the strawberry and see how that works. Thanks again for posting this one, if it works it is entierely too easy not to use it.
Ohh! 20oz is toooo much. You will enjoy 12oz much more, it’s just right! Enjoy! Thanks for stopping by!
Would reg. 7 up work???
Yes!
I did the same thing with the 20oz of 7up and lemon cake mix… it was BAD…. but makes sense now that it was way too much soda… i will be attempting again with 12oz
I made this but the only thing I did differently was made them cup cakes instead and it did not turn out visually as I hoped but tasted great.
Yes definitely too much liquid! I was disappointed that after figuring out it was too much it was not repinned with corrected recipe.
So I was happy I found this one with the perfect easy directions..thank u for posting!
Dear stephanie, I plan on trying the 2ingredient cake recipe with pineapple this week… My question is what oz exactly? Is says. 1large can but just to clarify and be certain use right amount…thanks:)
Angela, I’ve never actually made the cake with pineapple. (it’s on my list to try!) Another commenter said that it was delicious. I would use the 30 oz can (or the one that is closest to 30 oz, I can’t remember the exact number). :p Enjoy! Thanks for your interest in Lady With the Red Rocker!
It is a 20 oz can of crushed pineapple! I make them all the time.
I want to make two ingredients strawberry cake with crushed pineapple can. Is it possible?
Try it with strawberry soda!
how about red cream soda?
Yes! That would be yummy wirh white cake!
If it’s Duncan Hines, believe me It’s MOIST !!!

Wow! I’ve never heard of this before! Sounds like a really neat idea! Your cake looks so pretty, too!
What a great idea for such a pretty cake! I wonder, has any one tried this with diet 7 Up? Maybe not worth it since there is sugar in the cake already…

Did cupcakes like this using 1 CUP of Coke Zero, adding 1 egg, a teaspoon of instant coffee and a little vanilla. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS moist cupcakes!!! Made for diabetics, but EVERYONE loved them!
I’m going to have to try this!!! Thanks for the recipe!
That cake looks amazing, and so easy too, love it.
I’ve heard of people using chocolate cake mix with diet coke and it coming out oh so delicious. This version looks awesome too, and I might just have to try it. Thanks for sharing.

So you don’t put anything the box mix says to put in?
Amanda,
No, you just put the cake mix and the 12oz. of 7up. That’s it! Super easy! Enjoy!
Can you to this in a bunt pan?
Yes, I would just follow the baking guide on the box mix. When I made the cake I decreased the temp to 325 degrees and decreased the time by 5 minutes. Thanks for stopping by!
Looks like the jello cake I make. Gotta try this.
I did try it with a chocolate cake mix and 7-up. I made cupcakes and they turned out great! If you make 12, they are also only 4 points on Weight Watchers. =)
This is good to know. I have not tried the chocolate, yet… It is next on my list!
thanks for stopping by!

I saw a blog with this recipe recently and decided to try it, but wanted to do it sugar free. They don’t have a sugar free strawberry cake mix, so I used a Sugar Free Devils food mix. I didn’t think 7up would be good so I mixed it with diet coke. Yum! Moist and delicious!
Hey! Thanks, Frances, for the tip! I am going to have to try that! Thanks for sharing and stopping by!
Looks delicious. I am going to have to try it. Good work!
thanks for the recipe. I will definitely try this.

Hummmm….wonder if this would work with one of those sugar-free cake mixes and a diet soda? My diabetic father has a massive sweet tooth so I’ve decided it’s my job to find him sweets he can enjoy that won’t jack up his blood sugar.
Any idea if it has to be soda or can it be one of those flavored and carbonated waters?
I stock up on cake mixes when they are on sale since I have 2 small kids who love to bake. I will be trying this out this week!
I’m not sure about carbonated water, but diet pop is sugar free. Someone else commented, and said they used a sugar-free chocolate cake mix with a diet coke. Hope this helps! Thanks for stopping by!
Amazing! I love the pink also, but how do you get your frosting so fluffy?! That’s been my new obsession, no matter what I do I can not get frosting thick and fluffy. ugh.
Thanks Shayna! That is actually just cool whip. I cheated a little! Lol! Thanks for stopping by!
I can’t wait to try this but did you freeze your middle layer of cool whip before you put the top cake layer on? How did you keep the weight of the cake from squishing the cool whip out?
Dana, yes I did freeze the first layer, and then added the top, and froze it again. Thanks for stopping by!
Also great for those with egg allergies! One of the girls I babysit is allergic to eggs, perfect solution (I used sprite zero)
I pinned this on Pinterest. Thank you for joining Creative Bloggers Party and Hop

I love a good soda cake! I make mine with devil’s food cake and a can of diet Coke. When it cools, I whip together a tub of fat-free Cool Whip and 2 sugar-free chocolate pudding cups.
It’s like a mousse on top of cake!
YUM!!!
I will have to give the strawberry a whirl!
Oh Niki! That chocolate cake sounds de-lish! Cannot wait to try!
I have made these cakes with choc. (reduced sugar)& diet coke, also brownie mix with diet dr. pepper. They all are amazing. The key is just the right amount of diet soda. HMMMM…. wonder how a white cake mix with diet orange soda would be? That may be on the need to try list
p.s. your cake is way prettier than mine- my family doesn’t wait long enough for me to frost a 2 layer
I can’t believe how simple! Oh my I need to try it!! Already pinned it!

This cake looks so yummy! Do you Have to use a diet soda, or is regular soda okay?
Erin, You can use regular pop, but just have to add more calories, and sugar. Regular pop would still taste yummy!
Lemon cake works super well too! I’ve used it with sprite or 7-up or diet orange soda. I don’t even frost it cause it tastes good plain.
Do you think it would work with seltzer water? I don’t like artificial sweetners of any kind and using regular soda would defeat the purpose.
Susan, I’m not sure about the seltzer water. You could always try it to see how you like it. If you do try it, would you come back on here to tell us how it turned out? Thanks for stopping by!
Sure will.
Do you think it would work with seltzer water? I don’t like artificial sweetners of any kind and using regular soda would defeat the purpose.
Most health food stores carry naturally sweetened sodas…For example, Blue Sky http://www.hansens.com/us/en/products/soda/blue-sky/
Just made a lemon cake w/ cake mix and Mello Yello last night before seeing this today! There’s probably not 2 pcs. left as my teen-age grandson ate nearly all of it himself.
If you love 2 ingredient recipes, you have got to try this one.
1 Angel Food Cake Mix
1 large can of crushed pineapple in its own juice. (Do not drain)
Mix the two together and bake in 9×13 pan. Bake at 350 for about 30 minutes or until golden brown.
Oh, Wendy! That sounds scrummy! Will need to try that one soon! Thanks for sharing!
yes i love angel food ans 1 can of any pie filling is great too i like blue berry
Oh I will use Zevia when I try this since I am anti-aspertame…looks nommy.
Wow looks so good, I want a piece right now, Two ingredients who can beat that. Your cake also looks so gorgeous! Thanks for sharing your creative inspiration at Sunday’s Best!
It’s still amazing to me that people are just learning to make these kind of cakes! I’ve known about “Diet Coke Cakes” for YEARS!! and they are definitely delicious!! I’ve done yellow cake with Diet Mtn Dew or Diet 7 up (makes a great short cake trifle type stuff), I’ve done chocolate mix with diet coke or most recently with diet dr pepper which gave a great cherry hint. Have fun combining more!!
I’m assuming you baked two round cakes or did you just bake one and slice it in half? Can’t wait to try this!!!
Yes, I baked two round cakes. I’m not that talented to bake one and cut it in half. Let’s just say, it wouldn’t be pretty! LOL!
Quick question does it have to be a diet soda?
Pinky,
No, it does not have to be diet. You can use any kind of pop as long as you only use 12oz. Enjoy! Thanks for stopping by!
Awesome thanks. We never have diet soda in the house. Oh the combinations you could make! Chocolate and cola, caramel cake and rootbeer, pinnaple and orange soda.
This is one of those tried and true recipes that lives forever! I remember making these back in college in 1962. Was fun and easy. We didn’t have diet drinks then so used regular. Also works with white cake mix and lemon pie filling, or cherry or blueberry etc.

GENIUS recipe! And looks scrumptious! Pinning for future reference.
Seeing this cake reminded me of something my grandmother made that had jello in it to give it color. It was so light and sweet and sooooo good and then she never made it again. It’s really pretty with the white frosting!
The frosting looks wonderful and light as well. What type did you use, or do you have a recpie for that? Thanks!!
Thanks Kristin! I just used Cool Whip. So easy! Thanks for stopping by!
Making this right now! Any idea the nutrition facts?
Can you use a bunt pan?
this looks so pretty, and presentation counts for a lot! If you google, soda cakes, or soda pop cakes, or even soda cake mix recipes, you will find a ton of variations. 12 oz is a must. It works well w/ reduced sugar cake mixes, store brand mixes & soda, diet soda. Some folks add in 1 egg to help it bind together better but I’ve never had a problem w/ it being too crumbly. the egg does add height/volume. I always use a 9×13 pan, sprayed w/ pam. Vanilla mix w/ root beer is good, orange soda w/ white mix, cherry cola & choc mix, Big K soda has a pineapple flavor I think would be good w/ an orange cake mix (or pineapple!). Very versatile. My 12 yo son makes these every once in a while.
Wow! Thanks Lee Anna, for all the variations! They all sound so good! Thanks for stopping by!

I wonder if you can do this with Dr.Pepper and a chocolate cake mix? Do you have to add the eggs and oil?
Heather, I’ve never tried the Dr Pepper with chocolate, but I’ve heard it’s good. You can use Pepsi or Coke also, even Cherry Coke. The possibilities are endless! No eggs or oil. Just the cake mix and 12 oz of pop! So cool, right?! Thanks for stopping by!
i just tried white cake mix with Green River sooo good and great light green for St.Patty’s day.
What kind of frosting did you use?
Jennifer, I just used Cool Whip, but you could use any kind of frosting that you like.
Another 2 ingredient cake that is awesome is Angel food cake and a can of crushed pineapple… stir and bake.
That sounds Devine! Nice and light for Spring! Thanks for sharing!

I made these with diet Sunkist (my favorite) & white cake mix, topped with whipped cream! They’re delicious! Thanks for sharing the recipe =)
My sister and i tried the two ingredient strawberry cake exactly as your directions told us to, but the cake was awful. It took a little over 30 minutes to cook completely, and it fell and became soggy and spongey, and tasted chemically. Just a warning to anyone else, it really isnt delicious at all.
I’m sorry your cake didn’t turn out. That really stinks! I know a lot of other people who have tried it and liked it. Thanks for letting us know.
When you bake these 2 ingredient cakes. Which pans are used. ? Round? 9×13 ? Or is it whatever we chose? What works best. And is it necessary to grease and flour pans?
Angela, You can use what ever pans you like, just make sure to check the box for the approximate cooking time. (I usually decrease the temp to 325 and decrease the time by 5 minutes.) Yes, I also grease the pans with cooking spray, but I don’t flour them. Hope this helps!
I used a yellow cake mix with one Diet Dr. Pepper, added 3 tsp. Hershey’s unsweetened cocoa. Didn’t take time to make frosting but used ready to spread butter cream frosting. The cake was almost identical to Red Velvet cake, which I love.
Rhonda, that sounds so good. I’ve not tried the chocolate yet, but soon! Thanks for sharing!
Hey I recently made a chocolate Guinness cake for st pats dy…from scratch. Wonder if this old be applied to this method…12oz Guinness and a choc cake mix…or devils food. Hmmmm….
Yes chocolate cake mix and 1 can or bottle of root beer ????????????????????yummy
Shannon, one can of root beer.
Also…pictured is that one cake mix worth cut into 2 layers…or 2 cake mixes worth? I used a 9″ spring form…but I think I may need to make another box for the 2nd layer…
Sandy, that is one cake mix that I baked in two pans.
Hi! Thanks for the post! I used this as “inspiration” but diverged a lot from the instructions. Luckily, my results were goooood!- I used a classic white cake mix and 12oz of diet orange soda. I also added about 1.5 tsp of coconut extract, and folded in about 1/2 cup of shredded coconut. I made an icing out of about 4 cups powdered sugar, 1 cup melted margarine, about 1.5 tsp of coconut extract, and about 1/4 cup of pineapple juice (out of a can of pineapple rings). I topped frosted cupcakes with shredded coconut— came out AWESOME! Thanks for getting my wheels turning with this post
Wait! I used one STICK (aka 1/2 cup!) of melted margarine!! Don’t put a whole cup in there! sorry!!
Mmm! That sounds delish! Thanks for sharing!
I have made a chocolate cherry coke cake. Use a box of chocolate cake mix. a can of diet cherry coke or cherry coke zero. once it has cooled, put on a serving tray and pour a can on cherry pie filling. (i know pie filling is not low cal, but they have lite pie pilling). anyway, i am not a cherry fan AT ALL. However, this case was pretty good. and soooo easy!!
MMMM! Sounds so good, Stephanie! Thanks for sharing this!
This is a wonderful cake. You can also use diet orange soda with orange cake mix. I topped with coolwhip and mandrian orange wedges(drain wedges on paper towel first). Yummy!

Do I still need to put in the ingredients the box calls for??
Nope, just the cake mix and 12oz of pop! Enjoy!
I have made the Strawberry cake two times,it was a hit each time. Since strawberries are in season now, I chopped some up added a little sugar, then put some between the layers and a few on top!!! So good! Thanks for the recipe.
Mmm! The strawberries sound de-lish!
I just made a white cake with Fresca soda for my first two ingredient cake. It came out smelling of a pleasant citrus scent. Then, I put regular whipped white frosting on it. It was so moist the first night. It hardened after but I’m not sure if it’s related to the fact that I thought it was done (I baked it in a lamb form) and then had to put it in. But, serving immediately was a definite pleaser!!!! I could not believe how moist it came out!!!

I’ve been reading a lot about using soda pop to make cake, but everything so far also mentions “if your dieting” or “low calories”. My husband refuses to eat any dessert that falls under the “healthy” category. Will alternating soda for conventional ingredients take away any hint of taste…Other words, will my husband no the difference? hehe
This cake is more dense and very moist. He probably will not know the difference, especially if you use regular icing. Enjoy! Thanks for stopping by!
Great recipes. Fun and friendly.
I’m going to try this! I was wondering what you were supposed to use with chocolate cake. I googled it and it brought me to your website! Thanks for sharing!
Amy
fashionandbeautyfinds.blogspot.com
Thanks for stopping by, Amy! I’ve never tried it myself, but I’ve heard several people say to use Coke/Pepsi or Dr. Pepper. I want to try this myself. Sounds so good to me!
HI! I make this with white cake mix, and any diet lemon/lime soda. To frost, I mix one tub of cool whip with one box of instant lemon pudding (just the powder mixed with the cool whip). So refreshing!!
Thanks Cheri! That sounds delicious!
Tried this with dark chocolate fudge cake and cherry coke, also added in some diced cherries. Tastes fine, but major baking fail; toothpicks came out clean, the cakes were even level (never happens to me), but was still gooey and crumbly. =( Cake cobbler portions, ice cream topping, or mini parfaits it is! =)
Hmmm… I’ve never used the chocolate cake mix to make this… I’ve heard others try it with success. Enjoy your parfait!
I made the angel food with cherry, mom’s favorite. It was delic. In all my years I never heard of this cake. Next one I’ll try is angel food with pineapple and some coconut in or on it. One of my friends made pumpkin pie filling and box mix and we were ruminating about pumpkin and carrot cake… hmm with walnuts, raisins and pineapple? We don’t use artificial sweeteners, so I may try it with reg pop or even one of the new flavored carbinated waters. Anyone try the seltzer water type thing?
Has anyone tried strawberry cake with cherry cola?
I think that the fruit combo would be delish, just wondering if the cola aspect will discolor my strawberry cake mix?
Amy, I have not tried this, but I bet it would be yummy!
this alsp work great with orange and use diet sunkist
This cake looks so lovely. Something so simple made so fancy. Love it!
I made this tonight with strawberry cake and used strawberry Fanta too! It was really light and crumbly but the taste was spot on. I put whipped buttercream on it, but that didn’t weight it down. An overall crowd pleaser!
Mary,
So glad you liked it! Thanks for stopping by and letting me know!
Why do you have to use diet ? I bought regular 7 up? Is regular 7 up ok to use?
I used diet to cut out the extra calories. Regular pop is okay also.
This is probably a stupid question–but do you make the the strawberry cake as directed on box or do you only use the cake mix and 7 up. (As in no oil or eggs)?
Ashley,
You only use the 7up and the cake mix, nothing else. So easy. Enjoy!
Should the soda be at room temperature or can it be cold? Am making my own birthday cake with Dark Chocolate cake mix and Diet Coke. I don’t have frosting, so I plan on topping with a can of cherry pie filling!
Oh yummm! Sounds delish! When I made this I used pop at room temp. I think it would be okay to use the pop straight from the fridge. It shouldn’t change the taste or texture. Enjoy, and Happy Birthday!
What is the icing on the cake?? It looks like just cool whip?
Hi Taylor,
Yes, it’s just cool whip. I put the middle layer on and froze it before adding the top layer. I froze it so it wouldn’t squish out when I put the top layer on. Thanks for stopping by!
So u freeze the cake ? How long before it is thawed?
Cara,
You don’t really have to freeze it. I just froze it after I put the middle layer of Cool Whip so it would not squish out when I put the top layer of cake on it. Oh, and I set it out for about 10 minutes before I cut the cake. Thanks for stopping by!

Made this with chocolate cake mix and diet Dr. Pepper cherry soda. My 45 yr old son could not get enough of this. Will try another version soon.
Idk how anyo can screw this up! I came across the white cake with orange soda, I used fanta didn’t really taste like orange cream but was ssssssssoooo delicious n moist. It lasted a whole 5 mins in my house! 1 cake mike n 12oz of soda mean come on! I was dying for some moist chocolate so I’ll try it win Pepsi I also decreased to the temp n the time came out perfect I will definitely try the chocolate tonight.
Vanessa, I’ve not tried the chocolate either, but I will be soon! Enjoy your cake!
I made this for my pregnant daughter-in-law. BIG MISTAKE!!! LOL, just kidding!!! But she is now craving it (I think my son is craving it as well) and I am making at least one a week for her. I make an icing using a lg tub of Cool Whip, a box of instant strawberry pudding (or white chocolate if I can’t find that) and about 4 oz of softened cream cheese, (no milk) beaten together until the pudding dissolves. I garnish it with fresh strawberries. The girl can’t get enough strawberries!!!
I made this last night and left in the freezer since not eating til tonight. How long before eating do I need to take it out of the freezer? Hope I didn’t mess it up by leaving it in there so long.?!?!
I don’t think it would have messed it up. Just take it out before you start your dinner, and it should be ready to cut by the time it’s time for dessert. Enjoy!
Thanks Stephanie! That’s exactly what I did and it was delicious!
I am trying to make sure I understand this. If the cake mix calls for eggs and oil you don’t put them in? Just the 7-up? Or you make the cake mix like it says and use the 7-up in place of the liquid? I was thinking the cake would fall apart without eggs. Just wondering….
Hi Sheila! Yes, that is right. You do not use the egg or oil that the cake mix calls for, just the cake mix and 7-up. Nothing more. Isn’t that great?! Thanks for stopping by!

cake is so good ,but yes it does fall apart. I have made it twice and could not even frost it
the cake looks delicious! I will have to make it. What kind of pan do you use?
Hi Sarah, I used a regular 8 inch cake pan. Thanks for stopping by!
Try Red Velvet cake mix with 12 oz. Diet Dr. Pepper. Soooo Good. I made frosting with fat free cream cheese, splenda & vanilla. Then I mixed a tub of fat free cool whip into the frosting mix. This was the best 2 ingredient cake I have made, and I think I have tried them all!

We make this kind of cake all the time for my son who is allergic to eggs. White cake mix with orange soda is our favorite. Steer clear of grape and root beer. They end up tasting kind of like cough syrup.
I add half of a small package of pudding (flavor according to the flavor cake) to help it not fall apart.
omg love my soda cakes… i make chocolate and diet rootbeer… for the frosting i mix1 small tub of fat free cool whip with a sugar free /fat free instant chocolate pudding( 3oz box pre-paired with 1 cup of low fat milk ) delicious.. and guilt free

Anyone have a recipe for the cherry bread similar to the one that Bob Evans has for a short time only? My husband really liked it..

I wonder if you can make a poke cake out of this cake? The chocolate cake with cherry or strawberry jello, or with the Orange use lime jello!
Kim, I bet that would be good! I will have to try it!
I was wondering, what kind of frosting did you make? Thank You Ann
Hi Ann,
I just used Cool Whip on this cake, but you can use any kind of frosting you like.
Do you have to use carbonated soda, or can you use something like Snapple?
I use the carbonated soda, but I don’t see why Snapple wouldn’t work. I think it would be worth a try.
I must have done something wrong, I tried this and it just fell apart.. When I put it on a cooling rack it just crumbled.. I will try it again and see what happens I guess..
This cake is very soft. Try cooling it in the pan before taking it out of the pan to see if that helps. My cake was crumbly too, I just covered it with lots of cool whip. ????
Those question marks are supposed to be a smiley face. I don’t know what happened.
I have a silly question : so you are literally using a strawberry box cake mix but not including the things to make the cake like eggs, oil etc most of the standard box stuff … you’re only using the mix and a can of 7-up??
Yes! Just the pop! So easy!
