Spicy Sausage with Creamy Penne Pasta Recipe.

I love pasta recipes (Don’t we all??!!), but, I’m not one to follow a recipe 100% of the way.  I always change up something, whether it be the ingredients, or the baking time, or the oven temp, whatever.  Sometimes, though, it comes back to bite me… (Mom, please don’t tell about the time I made biscuits, and dad grabbed a handful to gobble them up, thinking they were cookies…) *ahem*

Yeah, I’ve been known for making some doozies when I try to alter a recipe. But, on the other hand, *most* (*wink*wink*) of the time the recipe turns out in my favor, and just perfect for my family’s taste.

I found this recipe on Allrecipes.com (love that place!!!), it was called Bow Ties with Sausage, Tomatoes and Cream, and I knew I had to mess with it ’cause we don’t like (whole or even chunky) tomatoes. If a recipe calls for tomatoes, I always throw them in the food processor to chop them up and make them soupy. (It’s a texture issue, people! ;))

This time I skipped the tomatoes all together and went right for tomato sauce. I also, switched up a few other things and this is what I came up with…

Spicy Sausage with Creamy Penne Pasta

1 (12 ounce) package penne rigate pasta
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 pound ground sausage
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1/2 cup diced onion
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 cup milk or cream
4 oz. cream cheese
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
3 tablespoons minced fresh parsley
Parmesan Cheese

Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook pasta in boiling water for 8 to 10 minutes, or until al dente; drain.

Heat oil in a large, deep skillet over medium heat. Cook sausage and pepper flakes until sausage is evenly brown. Stir in onion and garlic, and cook until onion is tender. Stir in tomato sauce, milk, cream cheese, and salt and pepper. Simmer until mixture thickens, 8 to 10 minutes. Pour sauce over cooked pasta. Sprinkle with parsley and Parmesan cheese

My family was not disappointed, they devoured every morsel, and wanted more! :D

Delicious, if I do say so myself! :D

  1. I followed the recipe exactly except I used 2 8oz cans of tomato sauce and for some reason mine came out pink. Not red like yours.
How did you manage to make yours look like real sauce?

    • Hi Bree! When I make this, I would consider mine pink as well. I think it was the lighting in the pictures that made it look more red than pink. I’m working on getting a DSLR camera, hopefully that will help with the color of my pictures! :D
